The Healthy Minds Network

Go to Healthy Minds Network homepage

The Healthy Minds Network is one of the nation’s premier research organizations contributing to adolescent and young adult mental health.  HMN is dedicated to improving the mental and emotional well-being of young people through innovative, multidisciplinary scholarship. HMN spans coast to coast with our principal investigators at the University of California-Los Angeles, the University of Michigan, Wayne State University, and Boston University. Our network proudly serves as a resource for post-secondary education administrators, students, researchers, clinicians, policy-makers, and the greater public.

For over 15 years, the network has administered the Healthy Minds Study (HMS), a population-level survey of post-secondary student mental health.  Over 935,000 responses from students at more than 675 colleges and universities have been gathered. In the past few years, the network’s research efforts have expanded into other facets of mental health in educational settings, including the role and health of faculty and staff.

New Report on Peer Support in Higher Education
A new report by the Healthy Minds team explores how colleges are using peer support programs to address students' mental health needs. It examines the evidence on program effectiveness, describes the most commonly offered programs, and shares findings from interviews with campus administrators. The report underscores the promise of peer support in strengthening connection and well-being, while identifying areas where more research and investment are needed

Testimonials from Participating Institutions

"As a consortium of colleges that specialize in arts and design education, the Healthy Minds Study has consistently provided AICAD and our member institutions with a wealth of valuable information about the mental health and well-being of our students. Through collective participation, we have gained deep understanding into the ways that our students are both similar to and, in a number of ways, quite different from their peers. The HMS data is highly valued by our community for the insights it yields."

"The Healthy Minds Study has been very helpful to Virginia Tech. Initially the flourishing results spurred the university to reexamine the housing/residential life structures and the establishment of a new model. ... Examination of racial and ethnic differences on the varied mental health measures has led to an expansion of preventative and clinical services to underrepresented students. ... While other data have helped inform these practices, the annual results from the Healthy Minds Study have been central to program evaluation."

"The Healthy Minds Study was hugely instrumental in helping us to secure several grants (total of $330,000) that helped me to launch the 1 credit resiliency course (AVS 102: Dolphins Changing Minds!) and the wellness ambassador fellowship. As you know, data is KEY! The course has ended up hugely successful with evidence of increased resiliency! ... This last chapter at Le Moyne has been so rewarding, and we know we are on the right path with this course. But the Healthy Minds Study was key to get this ball rolling!"
